Kazakhstan's energy-producing organizations appeal for tariff adjustment

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jun. 29

By Nargiz Sadikhova - Trend:

Energy-producing organizations of Kazakhstan submitted an application for maximum tariff adjustment, Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy.

“The electricity industry in Kazakhstan needs to upgrade existing infrastructure. Thanks to the electric power market introduced in 2019, modernization of the stations began. However, the forecast estimates said the revenues received from the electric power market do not allow to fully modernize and update the station equipment that has already exhausted its park resource,” the ministry said.

The ministry said that the depreciation level of stations is increasing year by year. This leads to power supply quality being compromised.

“The current level of marginal tariffs of energy-producing organizations (EPO) does not fully cover EPO expenditures, and the stations are forced to allocate part of the revenues from the electric power market to cover them,” the ministry said.

The ministry said that current equipment depreciation is about 60 percent.

“This is confirmed by the frequent cases of emergency power outages, a decrease in the quality of power supply to consumers and an increase in the risks of dependence of the unified electric power system of Kazakhstan on neighboring countries,” the ministry said.

The ministry said that if the situation persists, the funds that can be used in Kazakhstan’s energy sector for reconstruction, modernization and renewal of stations will go to neighboring countries.
