By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

North Macedonia and Greece are expected to sign a deal on a gas pipeline to get access to Azerbaijani gas in early May, Trend reports via Greek media.

The deal will be signed during the visit of North Macedonia’s Prime Minister Zoran Zaev to Greece.

The Greek part of the project will be developed by gas grid operator DESFA and includes a 50 km pipeline.

The pipeline links the Nea Mesimvria valve station of the Greek gas transmission system in the northern port city of Thessaloniki with Gevgelija located directly on the Greek-North Macedonia border.

North Macedonia through the gas Interconnection between The Republic of North Macedonia and Republic of Greece will have access to Azerbaijani gas. This Project at the last Ministerial Meeting of the Energy Community was selected as a Project of Common Interest for 2020. It aims at gas connection of the country with Greece and the Southern Gas Corridor in order to supply the country with natural gas from diversified sources of supply and, inter alia, from the gas fields in Azerbaijan.

The Southern Gas Corridor, which is comprised of Shah Deniz 2, the South Caucasus Pipeline Expansion, the Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP), and the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) became fully operational on December 31, 2020.

Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) AG confirmed on Dec. 31 the commencement of gas flows from Azerbaijan. The first gas has reached Greece and Bulgaria, via the Nea Mesimvria interconnection point with DESFA, as well as Italy, via the Melendugno interconnection point with SNAM Rete Gas (SRG).
