Iran's South Pars Gas Company prepares to launch refinery

The gas sweeting unit of the next refinery of the South Pars Gas Company (SPGC) will be launched in the 4th month of the current Iranian (June 22 through July 22, 2021), Managing Director of Iran's Pars Oil & Gas Company (POGC) Mohammad Meshkinfam said, Trend reports citing the POGC’s website.

According to him, rich gas extracted from 14th phase of the South Pars gas field will be processed in this refinery. The work related to the processing process in the units of the refinery has been completed.

Meshkinfam added that due to the spread of the coronavirus, there were some delays in the continuation of operations at the refinery.

The director noted that it is hoped that the remaining work at the refinery would be completed based on the appointed time schedule.

Reportedly, the refinery will process 56.6 million cubic meters of rich gas and 75,000 barrels of gas condensate to be extracted daily from the 14th phase of the South Pars gas field. In addition, the refinery will produce annually 10.5 million tons of LPG gas, 1 million tons of ethane and daily 400,000 tons of sulfur.

The South Pars gas field (called North Dome in Qatar) is a joint gas field of Iran and Qatar. The proven reserves of the South Pars Gas Field are estimated at 51 trillion cubic meters of gas, of which 36 trillion are extractable. Iran has so far spent $90 billion on projects of the South Pars gas field.

Iran extracted 570 million cubic meters of gas per day from this field in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2019, to March 20, 2020).

Reportedly, Iran is currently extracting 700 million cubic meters of gas per day from the gas field.
