Iran seeks to increase electricity imports

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jun. 2

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

Iran is trying to increase electricity imports to meet its electricity needs, the Spokesman for the Ministry of Energy of Iran Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi told journalists, Trend reports citing the ministry.

The spokesman emphasized that for this purpose, Iran will start importing 140 megawatt-hours of electricity from Turkmenistan on the first stage. Thus, a part of Razavi Khorasan in northeastern Iran will be supplied with electricity.

Rajabi Mashhadi added that at present, Turkmenistan's power line is connected to the Sarakhs County of Razavi Khorasan Province (northeastern Iran).

“With the rise in temperature in Iran, electricity consumption may exceed 58,000 megawatts per day. This complicates the electricity supply in Iran,” he noted.

As reported, Iran's electricity generation potential is 86,000 megawatt-hours, of which 68,000 megawatt-hours are accounted for by thermal power plants. The obsolescence of the units at a number of power plants in Iran has created serious problems in electricity generation.
