Iran sees increase in electricity supply

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept. 20

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The electricity supply in Iran increased by 6.4 percent during the first six months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through September 22), compared to the same period last Iranian year, the Spokesman for the Ministry of Energy of Iran Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi said, Trend reports citing the ministry.

“However, the electricity generation of hydroelectric power plants in Iran for the reporting period decreased by 39 percent compared to the same period last Iranian year. So, within the 6 months, hydroelectric power plants generated 5,700 gigawatt-hours less electricity, compared to the same period last Iranian year,” the spokesman said.

Rajabi Mashhadi added that the electricity demand in Iran increased by 10.9 percent, compared to the same period last Iranian year. About 99 percent of Iran's electricity needs are met by domestic stations, while 1 percent by imports.

Reportedly, Iran's electricity consumption has risen to about 70,000 megawatts daily this summer. This has led to the imposition of certain restrictions on the supply of electricity in Iran because, at that time, Iran's power plants were able to generate about 54,000-megawatt hours of electricity per day. For this reason, Iran has increased electricity imports in the summer to 650 megawatt-hours per day.

There are about 38 million electricity subscribers in Iran. Of them, 30.4 million are residential subscribers, 1.85 million are in the industrial sector and 490,000 are in the agricultural sector.
