By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The swapping of Turkmen gas to Azerbaijan through Iran will begin on the first day of winter (December 22, 2021), Iranian Oil Minister Javad Owji said, Trend reports citing Shana News Agency.

The minister noted that about two months ago, Iran began talks on gas trade with Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan. As a result, a contract was signed between the three countries.

“According to the contract, 1.5-2 billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas a year will be swapped to Azerbaijan through Iran’s Astara border,” he added.

Owji said that Iran's share in gas trade in the region is less than 2 percent, and necessary steps will be taken to increase it.

The minister also pointed out the agreement will help supply gas to five Iranian provinces – Razavi Khorasan, North Khorasan, South Khorasan, Golestan, and Semnan in the winter.

Reportedly, on November 28, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkmenistan signed an agreement on gas swapping in Ashgabat.
