BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb.1. EU is looking with great interest at possible Trans-Caspian gas cooperation projects and is committed to engaging with all the relevant stakeholders in the region, Kadri Simson, the EU Commissioner for Energy, said in an exclusive interview with Trend Feb.1.

She pointed out that the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council ministerial meetings will be an important opportunity to do so.

“All the conditions must be in place for the envisaged expansion of the SGC to be delivered on time by 2027 and this starts from the production outlook,” added Simson.

No contracts are yet in place for the construction of the Trans-Caspian pipeline. Turkmenistan is eager to transport 40 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Europe per year, of which 10 billion cubic meters can be supplied by Malaysian Petronas company operating offshore Turkmenistan. The rest can be pumped via the East-West pipeline that runs from the Galkynysh to the Caspian Sea coast.

Possible expansion of the Southern Gas Corridor with the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline can enable gas transportation to Europe to grow significantly.
