BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug. 2. Azerbaijan's natural gas demand has experienced a notable decrease, down by 9.7 percent year-on-year, Trend reports.

According to OPEC estimates, the country's domestic demand for gas stood at 10.088 billion standard cubic meters in 2022, compared to 11.170 billion standard cubic meters in 2021.

The historical dynamics of natural gas demand in Azerbaijan for the years 2018, 2019, and 2020 are as follows: 10.540 bscm, 12.530 bscm, and 11.120 bscm, respectively. This indicates a decrease of 4.3 percent compared to the demand in 2018.

In contrast to the decrease in demand, Azerbaijan's total natural gas production in 2022 reached 46.7 billion cubic meters, showing a significant increase of 6.5 percent (2.9 billion cubic meters) compared to 2021.

Among the major contributors to the country's gas production, the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli field accounted for 13.4 billion cubic meters, while the Shah Deniz field contributed 25.2 billion cubic meters. The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) also played a substantial role by contributing 8.1 billion cubic meters to the overall gas production in the country.
