BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 17. The 3rd steam unit of Iran’s Sabalan Thermal Power Plant in Ardabil Province (northwestern Iran), with the capacity to generate 160 megawatt-hours of electricity, has been connected to the country's electricity network, said Mohammad Ramazani, Deputy Director of Iran’s Thermal Power Plants Holding Company (TPPH), Trend reports.

According to Ramazani, a total of 130 million euros were spent on the construction and launch of the mentioned steam unit.

"With the launch of the last power unit, Sabalan TPP’s electricity generation has reached its full capacity. This power plant has six gas units and three steam units. In total, it can produce 1,440 megawatt-hours of electricity," he said.

Ramazani also pointed out that, in total, 799 million cubic meters of gas will be saved per year with the operation of three steam units at the TPP.

There are currently 616 power units operating in 134 TPPs in Iran. The power generation capacity of the country's thermal power plants is 74,198 megawatt-hours.

At present, the power generation capacity of Iran's all power plants, including thermal, hydroelectric, nuclear, renewable, etc., is approximately 91,000 megawatt-hours. Of this, 82 percent is accounted for by the country’s thermal power plants.

In Iran, electricity consumption is around 40,000 megawatts per day, except for the summer season (June 22 through September 22). Currently, electricity consumption in Iran is more than 72,000 megawatts per day.
