BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 28. Iran has commenced the drilling of nine new infill wells at the South Pars gas field, which it shares with Qatar, on Feb. 27, 2024, said Alireza Sadeghabadi, an official of Iran's Pars Oil and Gas Company, Trend reports.
Sadeghabadi revealed that the drilling of these wells is part of an agreement between Iran’s Pars Oil and Gas Company and the Pasargad Energy Development Company.
He added that the wells are being drilled across phases 3, 7, 19, and 20 of the South Pars field, with an expected completion timeline of 33 months.
These nine wells are part of a larger plan to drill 35 infill wells in the gas field, the company official noted.
Sadeghabadi further stated that Iran’s daily gas production from the South Pars field stands at 705 million cubic meters. In comparison, Qatar’s daily production from the same field is reported to be 625 million cubic meters.
Iran shares the ownership of the South Pars gas field (also known as North Dome) with Qatar. Iran's share of the field stands at about 33 percent. The country has been developing the field since 2002, investing a total of about $90 billion in its development. Iran's share of the field is divided into 24 phases, each of which is developed separately. Iran is developing its share of the field through its domestic workforce, while Qatar's part is mostly handled by foreign companies.
The proven reserves of the South Pars Gas Field are estimated at 51 trillion cubic meters of gas, of which 36 trillion are extractable. Iran's share in the field is 14 trillion cubic meters of gas and 18 billion barrels of gas condensate.
