BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 28. Effective water management can reduce the negative impacts of climate change, Deputy Head of the Office of the State Agency for Water Resources of Azerbaijan, Ulviya Mammadova, said at the “Role of Water Management Systems in Climate-Resilient Agriculture” COP29 round table, Trend reports.
"Climate change is a global reality that affects all spheres of our lives, but its impact on agriculture is especially great," Mammadova noted.
According to her, such issues as the future of the planet and food security against the background of rising temperatures, changes in precipitation, and more frequent extreme weather events make it necessary to ensure sustainable agricultural practices.
“Water is the lifeblood of agriculture. Water is important for soil fertility, crop growth, and maintaining the overall health of livestock and ecosystems. Through effective water management, the negative impacts of climate change can be mitigated now, and a sustainable ecosystem can be created for future generations. You must not forget that water is not just a commodity - it is life itself. Every drop is irreplaceable, and we must strive to conserve it at all costs. Physical infrastructure projects, construction of new reservoirs, reconstruction of irrigation canals, as well as the formation of new and alternative water sources, the study of effective use of the sea, treated wastewater, collector drainage, and rainwater have become priorities for the agency. However, the activities do not conclude here,” she said.
She mentioned that whether it is repair and construction projects, adoption of water-saving habits, or supporting policies that promote sustainable water management, everyone is obliged to contribute.
“We have a responsibility to bequeath to our children and their children a world where clean and safe water is available to everyone.
However, protection alone is not enough. We must also prioritize water education. By empowering users with knowledge about the importance of water conservation and the impacts of climate change, we can inspire everyone in the community. Along these lines, we must invest in research, development, and implementation of sustainable agricultural and water management practices.
In conclusion, let us remind ourselves that the challenge of global warming and water scarcity is not insurmountable. Together with determination, innovation, and collective action, we can overcome these challenges and build a future where water flows freely for all. Let's do our best for our planet and its wonderful corner called our homeland,” she noted.
