Aztelekom LLC of Azerbaijan's Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies has disclosed the results of 2019 on ICT development projects, a source in the company told Trend.

"During 2019, a number of projects were implemented with the aim of developing information and communication technologies in the Azerbaijani regions, reconstruction and modernization of infrastructure and meeting the demand for services," the source said.

According to the company, the main goal of the projects implemented by Aztelekom was to create a network in territories where there was no telephone connection, including the provision of internet services, increase the throughput of the main backbones and distribution network and replace obsolete copper cable lines with new fiber-optic lines, and outdated communications equipment with new ones that meet modern world standards.

"This year, taking into account the demand for telecommunication services in the center and new residential areas of the Absheron district, a project has been developed to introduce Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology. Within the framework of this project, the appropriate equipment was installed in the Mehdiabad village, and as a result of laying fiber-optic cables of various capacities, the inhabitants of the village were provided with telecommunication services. The telecommunication infrastructure was reconstructed in the Saray and Nubar settlements on the territory of Absheron, including the Novkhani, Goradil, Mahammadi, Gobustan, Chayli, Pirakashkul, Ashagi Guzdak and Yukhari Guzdak villages, the Khojasan and Sulutapa settlements and other territories," the source said.

The planned reconstruction of broadband infrastructure and, as a result, improving the quality of services covered several regions at the initial stage, including Ganja, Masalli and Sumgayit cities along with the Absheron district.

"In early 2018, Aztelekom successfully introduced LTE technology in order to provide telecommunications services to the population in regions with limited infrastructure and difficult terrain. As part of a pilot project in the Hulovlu and Garachi villages of Khachmaz district, subscribers were provided with fast internet using the installed equipment. In 2019, residents of Sumgayit and Absheron were provided with telecommunication services over a wireless network based on LTE technology," the source said.

The source especially noted the interactive television service launched in 2019 by Aztelekom. The benefits of the IPTV/OTT service include viewing 150 local and foreign television channels, viewing a three-day archive of TV programs and other features.

"Recently, Aztelekom LLC has been working on a network reconstruction project based on Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) technologies, in order to meet the demand for telecommunication services, as well as provide high-quality, stable and multi-stage communication services. Necessary equipment has been installed in the centers of the country's districts. The project is planned to be launched in the first months of 2020. The main objective of the project is to increase the capacity of the backbone network," the source concluded.

In various regions, covered by Aztelekom network, 23 new electronic telephone exchanges were installed in 2019, and work was done to increase ports in existing stations, said the company.
