Azerbaijan's share in air traffic activity of CAREC countries unveiled

Passenger traffic by air in the member countries of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) program under the Asian Development Bank (ADB) decreased by about 40 million people in 2020, Trend reports with reference to the ADB report on the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the aviation and tourism of CAREC member countries.

As reported, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Uzbekistan have similar aviation markets, each accounting for about 9 percent of CAREC's total passenger traffic.

In 2020, the domestic passenger traffic by air in Azerbaijan decreased by 50 percent compared to 2019 and covered 300,000 people. International destinations decreased 4.9 times, amounting to 900,000 people. Thus, the total passenger traffic of Azerbaijan through air transport during 2020 amounted to 1.2 million people, which declined by 76 percent compared to 2019.

The CAREC program, established in 1997, includes 11 countries (Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, China, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) and six multilateral financial institutions (Asian Development Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, International Monetary Fund, United Nations Development Program and World Bank).

The main goal of the program is to achieve rapid economic development and poverty reduction through mutual cooperation.
