BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept. 29

By Sadraddin Aghjayev - Trend:

New opportunities that have been created in the South Caucasus after the second Armenia-Azerbaijan Karabakh war allow implementing additional and very important transport projects, as well as accelerating the implementation of the North-South International Transport Corridor project, Ilgar Valizade, head of the South Caucasus political scientists club, told Trend on Sept. 29.

Valizade said that this opinion of the Azerbaijani side during the round table meeting dedicated to the development of trade and economic relations among Azerbaijan, Russia and Iran in the Caspian Sea was supported by Russia and Iran.

The analyst added that the holding of such events is significant, testifying that the countries are showing interest in developing cooperation in the logistics and transport sector.

“We discussed the practical implementation of this project during this round table meeting,” Valizade said. “The experts from Azerbaijan, Russia and Iran exchanged the views on the implementation of this project, as well as on the corresponding issues related to the process of ensuring a reliable political base for the implementation of the North-South project in a trilateral format of cooperation."

"Dozens of small projects are being implemented in the sectors of the economy, transport, investment cooperation, as well as humanitarian and cultural projects within the North-South project,” Valizade said.

While speaking about the problems of the implementation of this project, Valizade said that the sides stressed that the unfinished section of the Rasht-Astara railway by the Iranian side, to some extent, hinders the creation of a joint railway network.

Moscow hosted the International Round Table entitled "Cooperation among Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran in the Caspian Sea. Industrial cooperation and transit potential" on September 28, 2021.

The event moderators were Director of the Baku Network Center for International Policy and Security Gulnara Mammadzade and Executive Director of the North-South Political Science Center Anzhelika Trapeznikova.
