BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 16. A number of operations are underway on an investment of 1.5 quadrillion rials (about $35.7 billion) within the framework of Iran's maritime transport projects, Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development and Head of the Iranian Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO), Ali Akbar Safaei said, Trend reports.

Safaei made this statement today as he visited Shahid Rajaee port in Hormozgan Province, which is in the south of Iran.

The deputy minister noted that some of the maritime transport facilities there will be inaugurated during Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s trip to the province in February 2024.

He also said that Hormozgan Province has seen 150 trillion rials (about $3.57 billion) of investments in facilities and equipment that are ready to be launched.

Moreover, Safaei added that contracts and agreements worth 550 trillion rials (about $13.1 billion) were signed for maritime transport and ports in the country in the 9th month of the current Iranian year (November 22 through December 21, 2023).

Reportedly, the annual capacity of Iranian ports is currently more than 285 million tons. Iran is taking a number of steps to increase the capacity of its ports to 500 million tons per year.
