Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon discussed the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions in Astana, Kazakh presidency said June 10.

Nazarbayev and UN secretary general, who is on a visit to Kazakhstan, also discussed the ways of further strengthening cooperation.

The Kazakh president said the participation of the UN secretary general in this congress seriously increases the importance of this event.

"Although you're busy, especially, in the light of the troubled period in the economy, politics, interfaith issues, preparation for the 70th anniversary of the United Nations, you visited our country," said the president.

"Moreover, you supported our initiative to close the nuclear test site, which is marked as the International Day against Nuclear Tests on Aug.29," he added.

"We believe that by holding such forums, Kazakhstan makes contribution to establishing peace on the planet," said Nazarbayev.

UN Secretary general, for his part, thanked Kazakhstan's president for the invitation to such a significant event.
