The EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton welcomes the peaceful presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan as a further step towards consolidating democracy in the country, 24.kg news agency reported according to the EUbusiness reports.

Catherine Ashton however pays heed to problems with the voters' list and vote counting, which "underscore the need to improve the integrity of the electoral process".

"These elections constitute a final step in the process of transition from provisional institutions, installed in times of crisis, to legitimate state authorities, established through democratic elections," Ashton said.

EU foreign policy chief noted that "the presidential elections are also an important milestone towards the establishment of constitutional order and further democratic consolidation of the country". She assured that EU intends to support reforming process in KRG, particularly "in the areas of rule of law and socio-economic development".
