According to the Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov's decree, it is planned to open Turkmenistan's embassy in the Swiss Confederation (Geneva).
According to another decree, Esen Aydogdiev, who also remains the permanent representative of Turkmenistan to the UN Office in Geneva, is appointed as Turkmenistan's Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to the Swiss Confederation (the city of Geneva).
Opening of the embassy was recently discussed at Berdimuhammadov's meeting with Deputy President, Finance Minister of Switzerland Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf in Ashgabat.
Last autumn, Turkmenistan was elected vice-chairman of the Bureau of the Committee on Sustainable Energy of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), whose secretariat is located in Geneva.
The Bureau includes Switzerland, France, Italy, USA, Hungary, Great Britain, Russia, and Norway. In particular, UNECE last session, where the decision was taken on Turkmenistan, touched upon ensuing energy security, development of gas infrastructure in Europe and Eurasian continent as a whole.
It should be stressed that the UNECE has also confirmed its readiness to implement Turkmenistan's initiative to adopt under UN auspices a special convention "Reliable and stable transit of energy resources and its role in sustainable development and international cooperation."
