A meeting between UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Turkmen Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov was held in New York, Trend reports referring to the Turkmen Foreign Ministry.
The parties touched upon a wide range of issues of cooperation.
The UN secretary general noted with satisfaction the efforts of Turkmenistan to ensure peace and stability in the region.
Meredov held several meetings with other senior officials of the UN, the report said.
At a meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Liu Zhenmin, a discussion was held on issues related to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In this context, an exchange of views took place on the implementation of national programs and plans aimed at implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Meredov also met with UN High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States Fekitamoeloa Utoikamanu. The high representative welcomed the Turkmen side's proposal to host the International Conference of Transport Ministers of Landlocked Developing Countries in 2020, the report said.
During the meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary Anne DiCarlo, an exchange of views took place on topical international and regional issues. At the same time, the activity of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia with headquarters in Ashgabat was noted.
Turkmenistan regularly puts forward initiatives from the UN rostrum to ensure reliable energy supplies to world markets. Turkmenistan is one of the key suppliers of natural gas in the region and exports this type of fuel to China and Russia.
