Energy consumption by about 85 percent of 23 million households in Iran exceeds the global average, the Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development Hamed Mazaherian said.

He added that during last 40 years, Iran’s population doubled, but energy consumption increased by 10 times, Mehr reported Dec. 8.

According to annual report of Iran’s Oil Ministry, households consumed 91 billion cubic meters of natural gas as well as 76 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity during last fiscal year (ended on March 21).

Iran has a population of about 78 million.

Per capita electricity consumption in Iran is currently about 2,868 kWh, according to Energy Ministry’s statistics.
