Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani before departing for Sochi, Russia, said the Islamic Republic supports Russia 's recent military strategy against terrorists in Syria.
He explained that he was about to attend a conference in Sochi on regional developments and war, Fars news agency reported Oct. 21.
The MP stressed that regional countries are required to cooperate to bring peace to the war-torn area. He said Russia 's new approach to the Syrian crisis is realistic.
"The fight against terrorism is not a tactical or temporary issue. With regard to terrorist movements in the region, we should adopt a longer and more well-founded plan," the official stated.
The coalitions that were formed in the past year to deal with the crisis have all failed, which is why terrorists have grown bolder, Larijani observed.
Although not sending troops to Syria, Iran has provided the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad with military consultation.
On Oct. 20, Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdullahian said Iran is going to increase the number of its military advisors in Syria.
Government spokesman Mohammad Baqer Nobakht said the same day that "good news" will soon be heard about Iran 's role in the fight on terrorism in the region.
