Tehran, Iran, May 19
By Mehdi Sepahvand – Trend:
If President Hassan Rouhani wins the election for a second term, the region will be benefited security-wise, said Davod Hermidas Bavand, university professor and a prominent figure of the National Front.
“This will be of some effect especially considering his drive for reducing tension and conducting constructive talks,” Bavand told Trend May 19.
“Considering regional issues and recent meetings, it would be for the best if the Rouhani administration continues,” said Bavand, who, along with three other leaders of the National Front, recently announced his support for Rouhani.
The university professor underlined that Rouhani’s foreign policy was a key factor in who Iranians decided to vote for.
During his first-term presidential campaign, Rouhani promised to bring Iran out of isolation and establish new ties with the world. This he fulfilled partially by avoiding provocative regional policies and partially by bringing talks on Iran’s nuclear program with world powers into a conclusion with a landmark deal in 2015.
On Rouhani’s domestic policy, Bavand said he will have more freedom as president during his second term to act boldly and pursue his plans, because he won’t be looking forward to another election.
“Considering special circumstances of the country, there is the possibility of certain incidents society may experience in the future. If other than Rouhani is elected, then there will be some worry,” he said.
“Even those who had supported Rouhani ended up partially critical of him. This should come as an experience and make it more urgent that Rouhani act more boldly.”
