EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton on Friday welcomed the release from prison of Azerbaijani journalist Eynulla Fatullayev.
"I welcome the release from prison yesterday of Azerbaijani journalist and editor Mr Eynulla
Fatullayev. This is an important step taken by the authorities of Azerbaijan following the European Court of Human Rights' ruling last year in Mr Fatullayev's favour. I encourage the Azerbaijani authorities to continue their efforts to further strengthen democracy and rule of law as well as to respect its international commitments related to democracy and human rights", Ashton said in a statement published on EU's official website.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed an order to pardon a number of imprisoned persons on May 26. Those pardoned also include the former editor-in-chief of "Real Azerbaijan" and "Gündəlik Azərbaycan" newspapers Eynulla Fatullayev.
