The EU does not want to see new military conflicts near its territory, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland Erkki Tuomioja said in Tbilisi on Tuesday at a joint press conference with his Georgian counterpart Grigol Vashadze.

He said that in order to avoid resumption of the conflict, his country sent observers to Georgia to the EU monitoring mission.

"This is a very important mission, because it prevents a possible conflict," Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland said.

Participation in this mission indicates Finland's attitude to conflicts and ways of settlement, he said.

During the joint briefing the two ministers were terse and pointed out that they discussed at the meeting issues of bilateral cooperation and Georgia's aspirations to EU and NATO and the necessary steps in this regard.

Vashadze expressed his gratitude to Finland for its support to the unity and territorial integrity.

"We are also grateful for the assistance rendered by Finland to us on the path of integration into European structures," he said.
