Forty-one people were killed and 16 others injured in renewed clashes between Messiria and Rizeigat tribes in South Darfur State.

"The clashes started on Thursday and are still continuing. Until Saturday evening, 41 persons were killed and 16 others were injured from both sides," Izz-Eddin Mussa Mandil, a Messiria tribe leader told Xinhua Sunday.

"We do not have any information about the death toll of today's clashes," he added.

"A group of Rizeigat tribe on Thursday attacked one of our villages west of Kass town (South Darfur State) and then repeated their attack on Friday and Saturday," the tribal leader said.

"Today, fierce clashes are still continuing between the two sides," he added.

Mandil meanwhile urged the central government to intervene to stop the fighting between the two sides, saying that "the fighting is taking place at our areas. Until now we have not attacked, but we are defending ourselves. We will wait until tomorrow, and if the government has not intervened, we will have our response to these aggressions."

The governmental authorities earlier arranged for a reconciliation conference between the two tribes following their confrontations in March that resulted in killing of about 100 people from both sides.

However, the agreement reached in that conference has not lasted for long under continuation of the conflict between the two tribes who have disputes over land and pastures.
