Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has voiced an idea of African unity with an "African army" and "government.".
Gaddafi was speaking on Tuesday in the Senegalese capital Dakar when he addressed African youths and intellectuals, Xinhua reported.
"We do not want to remain in slavery. We do not want to remain an exclusive preserve of the Western industrial groups. We need African unity, an African identity and a single African government, " he noted in the Arabic language.
"Africa should unite so that we do not remain monkeys. No country can survive if it remains in isolation. This is a matter of life and death," he said.
In the presence of Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Cape Verde President Pedro Pires and Guinea-Bissau President Malam Bacai Sanhai, Gaddafi regretted the time lost in the search of African unity.
Gaddafi also stressed the need to establish a single African army.
The Libyan leader arrived in Dakar on Monday afternoon at the invitation from the Senegalese president. During the visit, he will take part in the festivities of the third global black arts festival, which was opened on Friday.
