Several Iraqis have been injured over the past two days, even though tight security was imposed throughout the country for the month of Muharram, dpa reported.

Four civilians were injured in Baghdad on Saturday when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in the city center.

In southern Baghdad, four policemen were injured in a twin bombing on Friday, a Baghdad security source said on Saturday.

In the incident, two bomb attacks targeted a joint federal and local police force in the Dora district, he added.

Also on Friday, militants targeted a convoy of Shia pilgrims in southern Baghdad, injuring four civilians.

The pilgrims were heading to the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (PBUH) in the holy city of Karbala, which is located 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of Baghdad.

The pilgrims reportedly planned to attend mourning ceremonies commemorating the martyrdom of the Imam, who was the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

In the northern province of Nineveh, a policeman and his son were injured when an improvised IED attached to their vehicle was detonated south of the provincial capital Mosul.

The officer was reportedly off duty when the incident took place in the village of al-Habboud in the al-Qiyara district.

Two Iraqi soldiers were also injured when they came under fire by a group of armed men in western Mosul.

The Iraqi authorities have deployed additional security, police, and army forces across the country, especially in shrine cities and places hosting Shia pilgrims, for the mourning period of the lunar month of Muharram, which began on December 7 this year.

The ceremonies culminate on the 10th day of Muharram, called Ashura, when Shia Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (PBUH) and 72 of his companions in 680 CE (61 AH).
