Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak must ensure a smooth transition to democracy, and the president's role in this process "remains critical," the United States' special envoy to Egypt said Saturday, dpa reported.
"We are aiming for an orderly transition to a democratic future for Egypt," Frank Wisner told a security conference in Munich, and "President Mubarak's role remains utterly critical in the days ahead."
Wisner was speaking via video link from Washington, just days after returning from Egypt, where he met Mubarak and Egypt's vice president, Omar Suleiman.
