European Union's high representative of foreign and security policy Catherine Ashton will pay a visit to the Libyan opposition's base Benghazi on Sunday, a source from the opposition said Saturday.

With a delegation of EU's officials, Ashton will visit the temporary office of the opposition National Transitional Council ( NTC) Sunday morning and hold a press conference in the afternoon, the source said.

The source did not tell other details of the EU delegation's trip, Xinhua reported.

Ashton announced earlier this month that the EU would establish an office in Benghazi to support the NTC and help with the security sector's reform and institution-building.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski also paid a sudden visit to Benghazi earlier this month, and became the first foreign minister from the European countries visiting here. He said he came to Benghazi after a consultation with Ashton, but denied his visit was a signal of formally recognizing the NTC.

The EU has already recognized the NTC as a legitimate interlocutor, rather than the sole legitimate representative of the Libyan people.
