The Egyptian army killed on Thursday a terrorist while he was planting an explosive device near Sheikh Zuweid hospital in North Sinai, a security source told Xinhua.

"The terrorist is a member of Sinai-based al-Qaida-inspired group known as Ansar Beit al-Maqdis," the source said.

The source added that the body of the killed terrorist was taken away by his fellows before they fled the area, and that the army forces defused the explosive device.

Meanwhile, the army destroyed five tunnels that connect Egypt's Rafah city with the Palestinian Gaza Strip, military spokesman Mohamed Ahmed Ali said in a statement on Thursday.

Ali added the army also arrested 13 Jihadist suspects, who are now being interrogated.

Security conditions have been deteriorating in Sinai since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi by the army in July, as hardline militants take the peninsula as a stronghold for staging attacks against army and police premises.
