Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Sunday that he was expecting a proposal from the US in the next few days to resume deadlocked talks with Israel, dpa reported.

He made the remarks to reporters after talks with Jordan's King Abdullah II, which tackled the "latest efforts to remove the obstacles" impeding resumption of the talks, according to a royal court statement.

"We conducted consultations over the political process, particularly the US role and latest developments of the situation," Abbas said.

"I agreed with his majesty the king to continue contacts and consultations in the light of an expected American initiative in the coming days, which we have to discuss together," he added.

The two leaders urged the international community to "come up with practical and unequivocal proposals for breaking the present deadlock and moving ahead towards a solution that ensures the setting up of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital".

The Palestinian Authority withdrew from the US-brokered direct talks with Israel at the end of September after the Israeli government failed to extend a moratorium on the building of settlements in the Palestinian territories that expired on September 26.
