Israeli troops cross technical fence with Lebanon

Israel Materials 11 October 2008 01:25 (UTC +04:00)

An Israeli infantry patrol crossed the technical fence into south Lebanon and carried out a search operation, but stopped short of coming across the formal border, Lebanese security source confirmed late Friday, according to dpa.

"The Israeli soldiers did not cross the UN-drawn blue line that separates the border with Israel, there is a technical fence which lies before the border line that they have crossed," the source clarified.

According to the source the troops withdrew after 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, Lebanese security sources in southern Lebanon said Israeli troops were seen on full alert at areas adjacent to the Lebanese border.

Israel has been in state of alert since the killing last February of Hezbollah's military leader Imad Mughaniyeh in a car bomb explosion in Damascus. Syria and Hezbollah have accused Israel of being behind his killing.

Hezbollah's secretary general Hassan Nasrallah declared "open war" on Israel during a fiery speech at Mughaniyeh's funeral.
