( dpa ) - Police in Germany warned the public Sunday not to eat shower gel given away last week during a carnival parade, saying one person had thought the product was yoghurt.

The unidentified victim, who suffered burning sensations in the mouth and throat after the snack, was unable to read any of the Italian words on the label of the free gift except the fragrance description "yoghurt."

Police said they were not sure if anyone else had mistaken the gel for food after the procession in Lampertheim, south of Frankfurt.

Tons of free gifts mostly sweets and novelties, are commonly thrown to crowds from floats during carnival in late winter.

Many gifts are low-priced Turkish and southern European brands which are not on sale internationally and have no translations on the packaging. Most product safety laws only apply to goods on sale, not hand-outs.
