Up to 87 candidates are competing for 20 senate seats as the final list of the candidates was announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan on Sunday.
Candidates on all 11 seats for Punjab and 11 for Sindh province, on seven general seats for North West Frontier Province and against one general seat from the federal capital Islamabad have already been declared returned uncontested, according to the official Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).
The election would now be held on 20 seats out of total 50, with 11 from Balochistan, four from Federally Administered Tribal Areas, four from North West Frontier Province and one from federal capital, falling vacant after retirement of the members on completion of their six year tenure in the Senate, the Upper House, Xinhua reported.
The APP quoted officials at Election Commission as saying that the arrangements were being finalized for the polling against these seats on March 4 and the elected representatives would replace those retiring on March 11.
