A 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook New Zealand's remote Kermadec Islands region Sunday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, CNN reported.
The quake hit at about 12:58 p.m. Sunday (7:58 p.m. ET Saturday) about about 825 km (520 miles) northeast of Auckland, New Zealand, the agency said. The depth of the quake in the South Pacific Ocean was 12 km (7.5 miles).
The trembler followed a similar 6.5-magnitude earthquake on May 16.
The Kermadec Islands make up a volcanic island arc that lies to the northeast of New Zealand. The cluster is uninhabited, except for a manned research station on Raoul Island, the largest of the islands.
