Boko Haram militants have killed at least 55 people in coordinated attacks in northeastern Nigeria, the army says, Press TV reported.

On Tuesday, the militants launched attacks on military barracks, a prison, and police stations in the town of Bama, and they helped 105 inmates escape from the prison, AFP reported.

"Heavily armed Boko Haram terrorists" launched the attacks around 5:00 a.m. (0400 GMT), said Musa Sagir, the military spokesman in nearby Maiduguri, Boko Haram's stronghold.

"Some of the gunmen attacked the military barracks, but they were repelled. Ten of them were killed and two were arrested," Sagir stated.

"But the gunmen broke into the prison, freeing 105 inmates, and killed all prison warders they could see except those who hid in a store, where cooking utensils were kept," he added.

"In these attacks, 55 people including two soldiers, some prison warders, policemen, and civilians were killed," he said.

According to a report by the Associated Press, at least 22 police officers, three children, and a woman were killed in the attacks. The AP report put the death toll at 42.

Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for a number of deadly gun and bomb attacks in various parts of Nigeria since 2009.

Violent actions by Boko Haram since mid-2009 have claimed more than 1,500 lives, including over 300 in 2012.
