Turkey’s Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said that 161 people were killed during the attempted military coup in the country, TRT Haber news channel reported July 16.

Yildirim said 2,836 servicemen involved in the coup attempt have been arrested.

The forces that attempted to overthrow the government through military means will answer for their actions, added the prime minister.

He also noted that the movement of Fethullah Gulen, Islamic public figure currently residing in the US, stands behind the attempted military coup.

Yildirim said despite the efforts of the Gulen movement, the people's will has won in Turkey.

He also noted that the arrests of servicemen, involved in the military coup, are continuing.

A coup attempt was launched in Turkey late on July 15 by a group of Turkish military servicemen.

There were reports saying that Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport was seized.

Later, Turkish officials announced that the attempt was foiled.
