Prime minister calls for direct talks on Turkey's EU membership with Sarkozy

( Cihan ) - Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan talked to French President Nicolas Sarkozy over the phone Thursday.

Commenting on Sarkozy's statements on Turkey's EU accession, Erdogan requested Turkey's EU membership be discussed face to face and not via the press.

Erdogan congratulated Sarkozy on his success at the presidential elections and wished him luck on the mandate.

The premier also stressed that Turkey and France were cooperation on economic, military and political issues and that the current issues (in relation to Turkey's EU membership) should be solved thru direct negotiations.

French President expressed wishes for a joint effort on the solution of the common issues between the countries and sent condolences in his name and on behalf of the French nation regarding the Ankara blast.

Sarkozy reiterated his ideas on Turkey's EU membership during his visit to Brussels and said that he still thought Turkey should not be a part of Europe.
