Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Dec. 19

By Huseyn Hasanov - Trend:

A new Boeing 737-800 aircraft has landed at Ashgabat International Airport, Turkmen media outlet reported on Dec.19.

This is the third airliner built in the U.S. this year at Turkmenistan's request, according to the report.

Turkmen TV channel Watan reported that airliners of this modification are characterised by high efficiency and comfort and are capable of carrying up to 160 passengers. Their range of non-stop flight reaches 5400 kilometres and cruising speed is 850 kilometres per hour.

"Specifications for the new airliners provide the opportunity to use them not only for domestic flights, but also for non-stop flights from Turkmenistan to almost anywhere in Asia and Europe," state news service Turkmen Dovlet khabarlary said.

Turkmenistan's national air carrier will be able to expand its coverage of international passenger transport and increase the frequency of flights on existing routes. Preparations are underway for the opening of a new Ashgabat-Paris-Ashgabat flight, according to the Turkmen state news service.

Earlier it was reported that a new large airport complex will be built in Ashgabat by 2017 which will be the largest in Central Asia. The airport's project was developed by Turkish company Polimeks and includes the construction of a terminal capable of serving 1600 passengers per hour, cargo and VIP-terminals, a 3800 metres long runway and reconstruction of the existing ground infrastructure.

Offices for an aviation maintenance base and a technical service centre will replace the existing hangars. The cost of this project is estimated at more than $2.5 billion.
