Iran eyes to spend less on power sector next year

Iranian administration through its draft budget plan has proposed to allocate 2.2 billion (75 trillion rials) to Energy Ministry over the coming fiscal year (starting March 20).

Alireza Daemi, a deputy energy minister, has said that the figure indicates a four percent increase compared to the current year, IRNA news agency reported.

However, the official said that the amount of the funds to be spent in the power sector has decreased by 37 percent reaching $212 million (seven trillion rials).

Alireza Daemi added that the ministry will make efforts to cover its
expenses through luring in investment and selling services.

President Hassan Rouhani handed over his proposed draft budget bill to parliament on December 4. The draft budget has put the price of US dollar at 33,000 rials.

In the meantime, the draft bill has proposed to increase the power prices by 67 percent seting the price of per kilowatt hour of power at 50 rials for the next year. The price of power in the current year is 30 rials.

Iran’s nominal and actual power generation capacity stand at 76 GW
(gigawatt) and 59 GW.

The country plans to add 26 GW to power generation capacity by 2021, of which 5 GW would be renewables.

Currently, renewables share 0.32 percent of Iran’s electricity generation capacity. Iran plans to generate 7-10 GW renewable power by 2025.
