Iran and Iraq can boost cooperation in oil and gas sector, the Islamic Republic's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said, Iran's Fars news agency reported Dec. 24.
Larijani made the remarks during a meeting with Iraqi President Muhammad Fuad Masum in Baghdad.
Larijani said that Iran and Iraq benefit historic ties, adding the Islamic Republic has supported Iraq in the country's difficult conditions.
The Iranian speaker also praised Masum's role in establishing political stability in Iraq.
Larijani also accused certain regional countries of supporting terrorist groups in Iraq.
The Iranian speaker is currently in Iraq's capital Baghdad for the last leg of his regional tour including Syria and Lebanon.
Heading a high-ranking delegation, he arrived in Najaf on Dec. 23 where, the senior lawmaker held talks with prominent Iraqi clerics.
Larijani also met with his Iraqi counterpart Salim al-Jubouri on Dec. 24 in Baghdad and discussed latest developments in the country.
During the meeting Larijani underscored that Iraq plays a pivotal role in establishing peace and tranquility in the region.
He also called for expanding the parliamentary relations between the two neighboring countries.
The speaker kicked off his regional tour on Dec. 21. Regional security and terrorism are at the top of Larijani's agenda in the tour.
