Four people, including a colonel in the Iraqi army, were killed in three separate attacks by armed militants, security forces confirmed on Thursday.
Security sources told the German Press Agency dpa the colonel was killed by militant gunfire in the Al-Kasr area of Mosul, around 400 kilometers north of Baghdad on Wednesday night.
In a separate incident the same night, two policemen died in an armed attack while making their way home in the area of Hay Aden in southern Mosul.
One police officer died and five others were injured in an explosion caused by a device planted in a police car in the Masib area of the city of Halla, around 100 kilometres south of Baghdad.
