The State Committee for Standardisation, Metrology and Patents of Azerbaijan starts the implementation of the European Union's twining project, head of the Department of Standardisation and Technical Regulation of the State Committee Namig Tagiyev told journalists on Monday.

According to him, the cost of the project which is directly related to the improvement of Azerbaijan's standardisation system is estimated at 1.2 million euro.

"The project is planned to be implemented in several stages. The first stage envisages the improvement of Azerbaijan's legislation in the sphere of standardisation, that's to say transition to systems of technical regulations and voluntary standards. With this in mind, the support of the European Commission is very significant for Azerbaijan," Tagiyev said.

According to him, the second stage envisages the organisation of technical committees operating in the republic in accordance with accepted international norms.

The department head stressed that currently 10 technical committees operate in Azerbaijan on different spheres of standardization.

"Special attention is being paid to country's non-oil sector. In this regard, it is necessary that the work of these technical committees would correspond to international norms. From this point of view, the project of the European commission also plays a significant role. It is planned to implement large scale works in this area in the next two years," he said.

According to Tagiyev, the third component envisages the large scale spread of standards. With this regard, it is planned to create a special portal that will allow organising services on the implementation of standards in electronic form.

"This experience is already being used in leading countries and this will be reflected in Azerbaijan in the coming years," the department head said.
