Azerbaijan's accession to the United Nations 19 years ago is a historical event. Naturally, the recognition of Azerbaijan at the UN was the result of long years struggle of Azerbaijani people for independence, deputy executive secretary of ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP), MP Mubariz Gurbanli said in an interview to the NAP official website.

"Currently there is an active collaboration with several UN agencies. One of the responsibilities of the UN is to take steps to restore the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan within those borders, in which the country was admitted to the organization," he added.

According to him, the UN Security Council adopted resolutions on unconditional liberation of Azerbaijani territories occupied by Armenia.

"The UN, as an authoritative international organization, should pay more attention to the Nagorno-Karabakh problem. It needs to particularly mention the steps by the national leader Heydar Aliyev taken towards improving the authority of Azerbaijan in the UN and UN's adoption of resolutions that support the country's territorial integrity. Heydar Aliyev had identified the strategic and tactical sides of policies implemented by Azerbaijan in the UN. His speech at the 49th session of UN General Assembly was one of the memorable events from the point of view of presenting to the world the truth about Azerbaijan at the UN level. This policy is continued by President Ilham Aliev, bringing to the attention of the world community the realities of Azerbaijan. In his speech at the 59th session of UN General Assembly, the President noted the importance of increasing the UN role in promoting peace and conflict resolution. One of the successes of our country is the adoption of UN documents on the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. This tells that most of the countries represented at the UN support the fair position of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan will continue activities within the UN to restore justice in this regard," he added.

Azerbaijan was admitted to UN on March 2, 1992.
