Estonian MP’s Union for Support to GUAM Calls on Baltic Assembly to Assist GUAM

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr S. Agayeva / Estonian MPs' Union for Support to GUAM called on the Baltic Assembly to assist GUAM, the chairman of the Union Eldar Afandiyev reported to Trend from Tallinn.

The MPs' Union for Support to the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM was established in September 2007. The Union undertook strengthening of Estonia's role in cooperation with GUAM and support to the organization. The Union believes it will be more efficient to cooperate with GUAM through joint efforts of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Therefore, the MP organization called on its counterparts - Latvian and Lithuanian MPs - to establish the same unions in their countries.

"The Baltic Assembly uniting could express its position for GUAM, as well as to form cooperation strategy with GUAM. Urgency of expressing the position is now very important given the events which recently took place in several GUAM countries," Afandiyev said.

GUAM is an international regional organization uniting Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova. The GUAM member countries cooperate within the framework of international organizations - the UN and OSCE. In 2003, GUAM was represented as observer in the UN General Assembly. Recently GUAM supported EU through program financing.
