Member of the Turkish parliament says Constitutional changes in Turkey can endanger country's democratic future sooner or later.
"The power of Islamists in Turkey will lead to civil confrontation and it can endanger country's democratic future," member of parliament from the republican People's Party Janan Aritman told Trend over telephone from Ankara.
The Constitutional amendments call for extending term of presidential office, enabling president who has terminated his office to run for presidency once again and complicating procedures to close down ombudsman's office and political parties.
Following March 29 municipal election, speaker of the Turkish parliament Koksal Toptan said amendments are needed to be made to the Constitution. "The amendments to the Turkish Constitution will be made under law," Toptan said.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said after municipal elections that small changes will be made to the Constitution.
"Islamists like Bulent Aric and Omer Dincel endangers the future that Turkey deserves. It can lead to civil confrontation in Turkey," Aritman said.
He said Dincel has stated on numerous occasions that Turkey needs a state built on religious values.
"The reasons that stand behind these people's, who advocate views contradicting country's major principles, being in power is obvious. Unfortunately, Turkey pursues a policy appropriate for the Middle East," he said.
Aritman said public opinion must be taken into consideration in democratic societies.
"AK party intends to make changes to Constitution in its own favor not taking into consideration public opinion," he said. Aritman said Turkish opposition will not support AK party's decision to make amendments to the Constitution.
He said it is not reasonable to make amendments to the Constitution just to meet position of one political party.
