Turkey plans to open the consulate in the Azerbaijani southern Lankaran region (270 kiloneters of Baku).
"We plan to open the Turkish Honored Consulate in Lankaran in the coming time. Then, we will turn this into the Consulate General," Turkish Ambassador to Azerbaijan Hulusi Kilich told journalists in Lankaran on May 29.
Turkey has decided to form the Consulate General in Ganja - the second biggest city of Azerbaijan in 2009.
Turkey was the first country which recognized Azerbaijan's independence. Turkey was also the first country which opened the diplomatic representation in Azerbaijan. The Turkish Embassy which was represented as the Consulate General in Azerbaijan on May 25 in 1991 launched its activity on Jan. 14 in 1992. The Azerbaijani Embassy in Turkey opened in August 1992. The Azerbaijani Consulate General launched its activity in Istanbul in the same year and in Kars city in 2004.
