Azerbaijan has signed the Third Protocol of the European Convention "On Extradition", the Ministry of Justice told Trend on Tuesday.
Justice Minister Fikret Mammadov, who was given authority to sign the document from the Azerbaijani side, paid a visit in this connection to Strasbourg on May 14.
With the participation of Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland, the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, and other officials a solemn ceremony of signing of this protocol was held, after which a meeting between Jagland and Mammadov was held.
Jagland noted that Azerbaijan is an important partner country for the European Council and stressed the importance of the early adoption of the plan of joint measures for cooperation between Azerbaijan and the Council of Europe.
At the meeting there was a fruitful exchange of views on the improvement of legislation, development of press freedom and civil society and other issues.
During the visit, a meeting with Chairman of the European Court of Human Rights, Nicholas Bratza, was also held.
At the meeting, the sides stressed the importance of work in this area, study and application of case law, strengthening the educational activities, translating relevant documents into the Azerbaijani language.
The meeting was also attended by the European Court judge from Azerbaijan Khanlar Hajiyev.
