Editor-in-chief charged with treason jailed in penalty cell in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 19/ Trend , K. Zarbaliyeva/ Editor-in-chief of Tolishi Sado (Voice of Talish) newspaper Novruzali Mammadov charged with treason and sentenced to 10 years in jail has been imprisoned in penalty cell.

Chairman of the committee for protection of Mammadov's rights Hilal Mamadov told Trend that the editor-in-chief has been imprisoned in the penalty cell for 15 days as he breached discipline.

The Committee is concerned with Mammadov's imprisonment in penalty cell due to problems with his health.

Press service of the Penal Service was not available for comments.

The former department head of Linguistics Institute at the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, the editor-in-chief of the Tolishi Sado newspaper, Novruzali Mammadov, and head of the newspaper, Elman Guliyev, were arrested in early Feb. 2007.

Mammadov was sentenced to 10 years and Guliyev in 6 years in jail.

They are charged with treason (Article 247) and instigating national, religious and racial trouble (Article 283).

Mammadov was moved to from Bayil remand prison 1 to prison 15 on Jan. 14, 2009.
