The first Azerbaijani expedition to Antarctica erected an Azerbaijani flag and bronze boards with photos of national leaders Heydar and Ilham Aliyev on the South Pole.
The Azerbaijani team was invited to the U.S. base near the South Pole. After their arrival, they learned that they were the first group from Islamic, Turkic or CIS countries to reach the South Pole by foot, sledge and hooked shoes, the Azerbaijani Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry reported.
The team led by Air and Hazardous Sports Federation President Huseyn Bagirov left Baku on Dec. 24 and reached the South Pole on Jan. 26 despite storms and freezing weather. They conducted scientific research on the continent with an average temperature of -25-40 degrees. They also performed over 500 observation and measuring operations on climate and synoptic processes.
